Ston and Mali Ston sit at the entrance to the Pelješac Peninsula, linked across the hillside by one of Croatia’s most remarkable fortification systems. Built under the Republic of Dubrovnik, the walls were designed to protect both the peninsula and the valuable salt pans below.

Ston remains closely associated with salt, still produced in the geometric fields beside the town, while Mali Ston looks towards a sheltered bay famous for its long tradition of oyster and shellfish cultivation. Together the two settlements combine military architecture, working traditions and gastronomy within a remarkably small area.

This makes Ston one of the most rewarding stops on the road between Split and Dubrovnik. A short visit can focus on the old town and salt pans; with more time, travellers can walk part of the walls or continue to Mali Ston for a meal by the bay.
