Omiš is one of those places where Dalmatia suddenly changes character. Here, the Cetina River emerges from a dramatic canyon and meets the Adriatic beside a compact old town framed by steep mountains. Narrow stone streets lead between small squares and historic buildings, while the fortresses of Mirabela and Fortica recall the centuries when Omiš was known for its seafarers and pirates. Just beyond the centre, the Cetina opens a completely different landscape of cliffs, river paths and green water.

Omiš works especially well as a stop when travelling along the coast between Split and the Makarska Riviera. Even a short pause allows time for a walk through the old town and along the river, while a longer visit can be planned around the Cetina canyon. It is a rare place where river, sea, mountains and history come together within only a few kilometres.
