Few Croatian coastal towns have a setting as immediate as Makarska. The Adriatic opens on one side while the steep massif of Biokovo rises almost directly behind the town, creating a dramatic natural backdrop to its harbour, beaches and terracotta roofs.

Makarska’s life revolves around the waterfront, but the town is more than its promenade. Behind the harbour, stone lanes lead towards historic squares, churches, restaurants and quieter corners of the old centre. The peninsula of St Peter and the forested Osejava area add green space and sea views within walking distance of the centre.

As the natural hub of the Makarska Riviera, the town works both as a destination and as a base for Brela, Baška Voda, Tučepi and Biokovo.
