Klis Fortress occupies one of the most strategic positions in Dalmatia. Built along a narrow rocky ridge between the mountains of Kozjak and Mosor, it controlled the natural passage between the coast and the interior for centuries.

Its history stretches across different rulers and conflicts, but Klis is particularly remembered for its role in the defence of the region during the Ottoman wars. Walking through the fortress today reveals a sequence of gates, walls, courtyards and defensive positions that follow the shape of the rock itself. The reward is an extraordinary panorama over Split, Salona, Kaštela and the Adriatic.

Because Klis lies close to Split and major road connections, it can be incorporated into several transfer routes without travelling deep into the interior. It is especially effective for travellers who want a strong historical stop combined with one of the best viewpoints above the city.
