Why visit

The ruins of Roman Dalmatia’s capital spread across an archaeological landscape only a few kilometres from modern Split.

Before Split grew around Diocletian’s Palace, Salona was the great urban centre of Roman Dalmatia. Today its remains stretch across a broad archaeological landscape in modern Solin, where roads, walls and ruins still reveal the scale of the ancient city.

Visitors can encounter the remains of an amphitheatre, forum, theatre, baths, early Christian complexes, cemeteries, gates and sections of the Roman street network. Unlike a compact museum site, Salona is spread across open ground, which gives it a powerful sense of discovery: fragments of a once-important Mediterranean city appear between grass, stone and modern Solin.

Its location close to Split and Klis makes Salona particularly suitable for history-focused itineraries. It can be visited independently or combined with Diocletian’s Palace to understand the remarkable connection between the Roman provincial capital and the palace that later became the heart of Split.
