Two extraordinary karst lakes beside the stone town of Imotski, shaped by cliffs, geology and changing water levels.

Few inland landscapes in Dalmatia are as dramatic as the lakes of Imotski. The Blue Lake lies directly beneath the town, enclosed by pale limestone cliffs and reached by a path descending towards its seasonally changing waterline. Nearby Red Lake is even more dramatic: a vast collapse in the karst landscape surrounded by steep, almost vertical walls.

Together with the wider Imotski lake landscape and Biokovo, the area forms part of the UNESCO Biokovo–Imotski Lakes Geopark. The lakes are not simply scenic viewpoints; they reveal the powerful geology that shaped this part of the Dalmatian hinterland.

A visit to Imotski offers a striking contrast to the coast. It works particularly well for travellers who want to combine the Makarska Riviera with the interior, replacing sea views and promenades with stone, deep karst formations and the historic streets around Topana Fortress.
