Why visit

A steep, stone-built Adriatic city of fortresses, medieval streets and two UNESCO World Heritage monuments.

Šibenik rises directly from the waterfront in a maze of stone stairs, passages and small squares. Unlike many historic Dalmatian cities founded in antiquity, its identity developed as a Croatian medieval city, giving its old centre a character distinctly its own.

The Cathedral of St James is the city’s architectural centrepiece, built entirely of stone and protected by UNESCO. Above the old town, a chain of historic fortresses reveals why Šibenik occupied such a strategic position overlooking the coast and archipelago. St Michael’s Fortress in particular combines history with some of the finest views across the roofs of the old town and the sea beyond.

Šibenik is an excellent stop between Split and Zadar because its main historic area is concentrated close to the waterfront. It rewards a proper walk, not just a photograph from the road.
